A field guide to choosing the right business card stock
Cotton, recycled, duplexed, edge-painted — what each one says about you before you say a word.
Most people pick a business card by the look. We think you should pick it by the feel. The first thing a stranger does with your card is run a finger over it. That second of touch tells them more than the logo does.
Here’s how we think about the four most common stocks we use at the studio:
Crane’s Lettra 110lb. Soft, fluffy cotton. Perfect for letterpress. Reads as “considered.” A little expensive, like wearing nice shoes to a casual lunch.
Mohawk Superfine 130lb. Smooth, crisp, dependable. Reads as “professional, no surprises.” The lawyer’s favorite. We use it when foil is the star and we want a flat canvas.
French Pop-Tone 140lb. Saturated colors top to bottom. Reads as “we have a personality.” Great for studios, designers, and people who don’t want to look like everyone else in the rolodex.
Triplexed 600gsm with edge paint. Three layers of paper glued together with a stripe of color sandwiched in. Reads as “we mean business.” Hard to forget. Hard to lose.
The right answer depends on the room you want to walk into.
